Matchbox

Lesney Products was founded in England in 1947 by Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith. Jack Odell joined them as a partner, and the company began making small toys alongside its other die-cast work. In 1953 Lesney introduced the Matchbox Series, a line of compact die-cast vehicles sold in matchbox-style boxes. Its first models included a road roller, dumper and cement mixer. The cars and trucks were not built to one shared scale; their size was governed by the small format of the range. The series expanded from three models at launch to 18 listed in 1955 and 72 in 1959. Matchbox vehicles were initially presented as inexpensive playthings, with a range broad enough to include buses, tractors, emergency vehicles and commercial vans. Lesney added further ranges, including Models of Yesteryear, while the Matchbox name became its best-known line. In 1968, after Mattel’s Hot Wheels challenged the British range, Lesney introduced the Superfast line and expanded into fantasy and licensed designs, including Disney-themed vehicles. Manufacturing costs in England contributed to Lesney’s financial collapse. Universal Internal acquired the Matchbox products and formed Matchbox International; much production moved to Asia. Mattel later acquired the brand, which remains part of its toy portfolio.
