The story of Ludwig Lutz
Ludwig Lutz’s toy-making company was based in Ellwangen, Württemberg. It made handcrafted, painted tin toys, including clockwork cars and toy trains. In 1891, Märklin absorbed the company. The acquisition brought Lutz’s workforce and specialist toy-making skills to Göppingen, where they joined Märklin’s existing business. Märklin combined this experience in design and finishing with increased use of machinery. Lutz’s history as an independent maker therefore ended in a takeover, while its workforce and methods became part of Märklin’s production.
