Lorenz Bolz Zirndorf (LBZ)
Description
German manufacturer of spinning tops in the early days. After WW II LBZ produced some narrow gauge (0 gauge) trains for industrial purposes.
The company was founded in 1880, producing spinning tops. In 1913 Bolz invented the buzzing or humming top, followed by musical tops. In 1937 an LBZ top could produce up to 20 tones. These spinning tops were originally made from lithographed tinplate, from the 1970s onwards from plastic.
In the late 1940s/early 1950s, Bolz developed a narrow gauge light railway on 0 gauge track, based on the industrial narrow gauge rail systems used to clear the rubble of the many bombed cities. The engine had a bakelite housing and was clockwork driven, the accompanying dump trucks were made of tinplate. The couplings and the 0 gauge track were supplied by Distler. The engine was also made as a tractor on caterpillar tracks and sold with either a dump truck or a trailer (which was probably bought in). With the sets went a tinplate conveyor belt, adjustable in height and operated by either a hand crank or a clockwork mechanism. This was the extent of the LBZ toy train range, which was discontinued at the end of the 1950s. The firm is still (2024) active with selling spinning tops, though the tops are not being made in Germany any longer.
