JL (Johnny Lightning) is a renowned brand in the toy world specifically known for producing elaborate miniature models of vehicles. Both vintage and modern car replicas from this brand are a hit among collectors. What makes Johnny Lightning stand out is their high level of detail and accuracy in replicating well-known car models. Moreover, the brand also dips into pop culture by creating vehicle versions from popular television shows, movies and even comic books.
Johnny Lightning was initiated with a roar in 1969, in the bustling city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by the toy manufacturer, Topper Toys. Already famous for their Dawn fashion doll line, Topper Toys decided to enter the vast world of collectibles with its first successful launch. Interesting fact: the name "Johnny Lightning" comes from their first and most successful car model called 'Johnny Lightning 500'. This model was made in reaction to the popular Hot Wheels named "Indy 500". Their initiative to explore lesser-known car models and attention to detail set them apart from other competitors. Unfortunately, in 1971, Topper Toys filed for bankruptcy, putting a halt on Johnny Lightnings production. Luckily, Playing Mantis, a US toy manufacturer, revived Johnny Lightning in 1994 and reignited the production. Since then, the brand's journey has been a captivating ride.
