Cox Models
Description
Cox Models was an American brand specializing in gas-powered model airplanes, cars, and boats. The company was best known for its high-performance, small-displacement internal combustion engines, which powered a wide range of ready-to-run and build-it-yourself models.
Cox products were designed for both hobbyists and competitive racers, offering durable and high-speed models that became iconic in the mid-20th century. The company expanded into slot cars and model trains, further solidifying its reputation in the model hobby industry.
Cox Models was founded in 1945 in Santa Ana, California, by Leroy M. Cox. The company initially produced die-cast metal cars before shifting focus to gas-powered models in the 1950s. Cox became a leader in the model engine industry, producing millions of small-displacement engines used in airplanes, cars, and boats.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Cox expanded into slot cars and HO-scale model trains. However, as consumer interest in gas-powered models declined and electronic alternatives became more popular, the company struggled. Cox was eventually acquired by Estes Industries in the 1990s, marking the end of its independent operations. Today, vintage Cox models and engines remain highly collectible.
