Balboa
Description
Balboa Scale Models was a U.S.-based model train brand that specialized in producing brass locomotives and rolling stock in HO scale. Founded in 1964, the company became well known for its high-quality imported brass models, primarily focusing on steam locomotives, diesel engines, and passenger cars from various American railroads.
Balboa worked with Japanese manufacturers such as Tenshodo and Kumata, which produced their finely detailed brass models. These trains were hand-assembled and unpainted, catering to serious collectors and modelers who desired accurate replicas of real-life locomotives.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Balboa was one of the prominent brass model train importers in the U.S., competing with brands like Westside, PFM (Pacific Fast Mail), and Sunset Models. However, by the early 1980s, the brand disappeared from the market, likely due to declining demand and rising costs of brass production.
Today, Balboa brass models remain highly collectible, with some rare models fetching premium prices among enthusiasts. The company's legacy continues in the world of high-end model railroading, where brass trains are still regarded as top-tier collectibles.
