Adolf Schuhmann
Description
Producer of tin toy trains and cars in Nuremberg, Germany.
The firm of Adolf Schuhmann was founded in 1905, at first producing tinplate track, possibly for larger toy train manufacturers like Bing, Carette or Schoenner. Soon the firma also produced floor runners, with and without clockwork mechanisms. It is unclear when Schuhmann started to offer toy trains on track, possibly only after the First World War; known from the early twenties are simple 28 mm and 0 gauge sets. The firma also made 00 gauge trains, some of which were sold in sets marketed by Einco (trade name used by the German exporter Eisenmann & Co). Schuhmann also made toy train accessories and tinplate cars. Schuhmann was very export-orientated, especially to Great Britain; in the Thirties about 65% of Schuhmann’s production was sold abroad.
In 1938 Schuhmann, who was Jewish, was forced to sell his company to Ottmar Beckh, who continued to produce a large part of the toy train range of Schuhmann.
