Hop hop hop horse run at full gallop!
This is the title of a Dutch children’s song. Perfectly applicable for this delicate German toy made by Greppert & Kelch (G&K). This manufacturer was settled in the eastern part of Germany: Brandenburg. Since 1919 many delicate and beautiful toys were made by this manufacturer.
At the time when this toy was offered on the market it was still quite normal to go by a single-horse carriage. But even today this special type of carriage is used for special events or races.
There is a detail nice to know about this type of toy. When you name this in German it is called an “Einspänner”. Going back again to Austria – Vienna this German name does refer also to a special Viennese coffee called “Einspänner”: an espresso topped with whipped cream. It has been given this name since the coachman of the carriages drank this beverage while waiting; the advantage of the topping was that the coffee remained hot. A nice treat if you are in Vienna.
This toy carriage will remain in the KallisToys Museum Collection and is waiting for some others to share.
