D-Day: Omaha Beach - June 6th 1944
Dive into the heart of D-Day with this meticulously crafted diorama, capturing the essence of June 6, 1944, when Allied forces embarked on the monumental Operation Overlord. This masterpiece, taking about a month to construct, features a dynamic landscape built on a 100 x 60 cm base, incorporating polystyrene plates to create varied terrain, complete with trenches and bomb craters shaped using a gas burner. The surface is then coated with model plaster to prepare it for painting, ensuring the polystyrene beneath remains intact.
The diorama brings to life the greenery of the battlefield with carefully painted surfaces and "Busch pflanzen vlies," creating a realistic setting that's further enhanced by the painstakingly airbrushed beach in authentic sand color. The water is ingeniously crafted using a layer of model plaster followed by transparent silicone kit to simulate the sea, with the colors blending seamlessly from the beach to the depths, and finished with white silicone kit to mimic frothy wave tops.
Central to the scene is a replica of the WN62 bunker, still standing on Omaha Beach, constructed from plaster bricks that are meticulously glued together and shaped to perfection. The diorama includes a variety of models, such as the LCVP landing crafts by Heller and Pegasus, US Rangers adapted to the 29th Infantry Division, German Grenadiers by Italeri, and a set of military vehicles by Academy, providing a detailed and historically accurate representation of the forces involved in the D-Day landing.
