From 1922 till 1940 Hornby offered Gunpowder Vans in their 0 gauge range. The first one appeared in 1922 and was lettered LNWR (London and North Western Railway). This one was also available in 1923, but in that year the so-called Grouping of railway companies in Great Britain took place and there were now only four companies: London, Midland and Scottish (LMS), Southern Railway (SR), London and North-Eastern Railway (LNER or NE) and Great Western (GW or GWR). In 1924 the Gunpowder Vans appeared lettered for LMS and LNER. In 1926 a GW variant appeared and in 1928 there also came a SR version. Up until 1927 the company lettering on the bodies had been in white, but in that year it was changed to large, golden letters, shaded in red, as on the LMS van in the pictures. All Gunpowder Vans had red bodies with a white roof on a black base, except the GW vans, which from 1928 on had a grey body with an embossed red cross on the door. The same doors with the embossed cross were also used in 1928-1929 on the other, red bodies. In 1930 a new wagon base was introduced and in 1931 the drop -link couplings were replaced by automatic couplings. Later that year the hinged doors which had been used from the beginning were replaced by sliding doors. After 1933 the bodies had smaller gold letters than before and the last version of the Gun Powder Vans of 1939-1940 had white company letters. After the war no Gunpowder Vans were made.
