Its engineering milestones include designing and manufacturing DAF-branded engines from 1957, turbocharging a diesel engine in 1959, and introducing turbo-intercooling in 1973. The story of Daf

On 1 April 1928, Hub van Doorne established a small construction workshop in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. From those beginnings, DAF developed into a truck manufacturer. The company designed and began manufacturing its own DAF-branded engines in 1957. In 1959 it added a turbocharger to its DD575 diesel engine, and in 1973 it introduced turbo-intercooling. During the 1980s, DAF introduced Advanced Turbo Intercooling, further refining the engine technology.

DAF's documented history is that of a vehicle manufacturer. The available company and museum histories describe transport engineering and commercial vehicles, not a distinct DAF toy or model-making business. This profile therefore concerns DAF as the Dutch vehicle manufacturer.
