Ernst Heinrichsen
Description
Ernst Heinrichsen was a 19th-century German manufacturer of hand-painted tin figures, renowned for their historical, military, and cultural themes. His work remains a cornerstone of early flat figure production and European toy history.
Founded in Nuremberg, Germany, in the early 1800s, Ernst Heinrichsen was a pioneer in producing flat tin figures (Zinnfiguren). His factory became widely respected for its intricately cast and finely painted sets, depicting a broad range of historical and everyday scenes.
What set Heinrichsen apart was not only the quality but also the breadth of representation: scenes included Prussian military life, city and countryside activities, and — unusually for the period — non-European cultures such as African tribes, South American figures, and Egyptian or Arab subjects. These figures served both as toys and educational tools, reflecting the 19th-century fascination with global cultures.
The company remained active into the 20th century and continues to be studied and collected worldwide. Surviving pieces — especially complete boxed sets — are considered valuable cultural artifacts.
