Founded in 1979, Gils began its journey in the picturesque town of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, under the guidance of Gilberto M. de Sousa. Gilberto's passion for artistry, storytelling and historical accuracy quickly became the lynchpin of the brand. One interesting fact – Gils didn't start as a toy brand, but rather as a restorer of vintage furniture! A chance commission of creating miniature furniture models piqued Gilberto's interest in developing collectible miniatures, leading to the formation of Gils Toy Brand.
