American Model Toys
Description
American Model Toys (AMT) was a pioneering U.S. model train manufacturer renowned for its O-gauge scale freight cars, passenger cars, and accessories. The brand gained widespread recognition for its high-quality die-cast and plastic rolling stock and its innovative "Liftamatic" automatic coupling system, which allowed hands-free uncoupling with a track ramp.
AMT was founded in 1948 in Auburn, Indiana, emerging as a serious competitor to major model train brands like Lionel and Marx. It specialized in producing realistic 40-foot boxcars that adhered to the standards of the American Association of Railroads. Their trains were known for their durability, realistic detailing, and advanced features for the time.
Despite its success, AMT struggled financially, and in 1957, it was acquired by Kusan, another model train company that continued some of AMT’s product lines under its own brand. AMT's influence, however, remained strong, and its models are still sought after by collectors today.
